Will Checking Your Business Funding Options Hurt Your Credit?

Checking your business funding options with Pro Capital is free and has no credit impact. Here is why your credit matters when you look for business funding and how to shop for funding without hurting your score.

Why your personal credit matters for business funding

Owners' credit is often part of the deal. Of employer firms with debt, 59% secured it with a personal guarantee and 38% with the owner's personal assets, according to the Federal Reserve Banks' 2026 Small Business Credit Survey report on employer firms. The same survey measures credit risk using either a business credit score or the owner's personal credit score, depending on which one the firm uses to get financing.

A low score is a common reason for a "no." Among applicants turned down for at least some financing, 30% said a low credit score was a reason (same report).

How to shop for funding without hurting your credit

  1. Check your own reports first. It does not affect your scores, and the nationwide credit reporting companies let you get your reports every week if you request them (CFPB). Look for errors and anything you do not recognize.
  2. Compare options before you formally apply. Narrow your choices first, then apply only with the lender you plan to use.
  3. Do not shotgun applications. Sending many applications in a short period can make lenders more cautious.
  4. Keep the basics strong. On-time payments and your overall debt load matter a lot to your FICO Scores (myFICO).
